the black, the gold, and the ugly

You guys!  I'm so excited about my move from the rainy city of Seattle back to the loving arms of the South, I've already started wish-listing, pre-shopping and generally obsessing about buying new new new home stuff!!!  Ok, ok.  I'll be honest.  I've been doing this since April, when I first decided that I wanted to peace out from the Great NorthWest (I really like saying the last part because it kinda sounds like I was hangin' with Kimye's bebe).

Anyway... All that is leading up to my theme for December, this month I'll be focusing on new home goodies. We already discussed the towels last post so today I'd like to chat about flatware... pretty much my obsession since, oh, forever.

Adulthood!
I'm blown away that I actually remember the exact set I purchased for my freshman dorm (it was probably a sign then that I should have studied design). For the price ($50) I never had anything to complain about with the set. It lasted through three cities and about four moves before I finally gave in and replaced it with some cheap Ikea stuff. Obviously, my parents purchased the first set and I bought the Ikea stuff. But we all know how moves work, things disappear and are never to be seen again and you just gotta move on.

About a year and a half ago, I moved (really, I move alot) into a studio apartment in the Queen Anne neighborhood of Seattle. I was determined to create something chic and adorable out of this tiny 400 square foot space so I became obsessed with finding just the right pieces. I had seen an image of gold flatware on LonnyMag and became obsessed. I scoured the internet for hours, from Bed, Bath and Beyond to Saks 5th Avenue, but I just couldn't find anything that wasn't absolutely hideous or outrageously expensive. When I finally did stumble upon this fantastic gold flatware set from West Elm I was beyond ecstatic (really, you'd think I'd won the lottery). Then it happened. Within six months, every single piece had lost its luster and by the end of a year, they were barely gold. I was heartbroken, after all, my dreams had literally washed down the drain! I bundled up all my sad flatware and hauled it over to my local West Elm store where they were kind enough to give me a merchandise credit and apologize profusely for my disappointment.

So, as much as I desperately want more pretty gold flatware, I'm extremely hesitant to purchase it again (at least for everyday use). And normally, I'd totally write off a store after that kind of an experience, but their customer service was totes amazing so now I'm considering this super shiny, onyx colored flatware.
I love the classic curves with the modern twist of shiny onyx. It would add a super fun pop to a girly table with lots of pink and white. Typically, I shy away from black (except for my clothes) but I think I could make an exception with this one. Let's just hope I don't have to get another credit...

fluffy or flat?

For the past three years I've been spoiling myself rotten with Restoration Hardware's 802-gram Turkish Towels that they claim are the most luxurious in the world. And, no lie, they're pretty darn awesome. They're fluffy, absorbent and truth-be-told, worth every penny.

But, I'm moving, which means...new towels! And lately I've been curious about the flat woven traditional Turkish cotton towels out there. So I did a little digging and found this fantastic local company based outside of Nashville, Tn called Turkish-T. They claim that their towels last longer than looped terry-cloth towels and are environmentally friendly. Hello, long term investment strategy. (Not to mention that they come in a rainbow of colors to suit your every need!)

I'll be ordering a few sets of these guys in the next month or so and I'll keep you posted on my results!
